“Shitty First Drafts”
In the essay “Shity First Drafts”, Anne Lamott depicts the
process of writing first drafts. She talks about the several steps she goes
through to come up with her final published works. First Lamott speaks on what
she believes in, and gives a short description of her thoughts and personal
life. She then moves on to what I believe is her thesis and is set to begin her
“shitty” first drafts. She starts off with what she calls a “child’s draft”
which is her first five pages that consists mainly of brainstorming. With the
thought in mind that no one is going to see this “child’s draft”, she gives
herself the ability to write whatever comes to mind. As a writer, she has the
fear of someone getting a hold of this first draft before she is able to
revise. Lamott gives a really good visual of her process, stating that at first
it would simply be just typing and making her fingers move. Then after crossing
out lines and phrases that she could do without, she would begin a second
draft.

SWA Genre Analysis
Academic text: In Defense of Football
Is
Part Of: The Wall Street Journal, 2013
Author: Max Boot
In this article, Max Boot speaks about how athletes at the
college and professional level, along with pop warner and high school continue
to be agitated by reports that football is too dangerous to approve of. Many law
suits and complaints have been filed for deaths by overheating or other freak
accidents. But the main criticism focuses on the impact of repeated hits to the
head. Even the hits that don’t result in concussions sometimes result in brain
disorders that cause mood disorders and dementia.
Photographic Text:
In this image, it displays a professional athlete that
played for the Titans getting his head smashed in between two other athletes
running at full speed aiming to take him down. This is one of many ways that
professional athletes receive concussions. This athlete in particular, most
likely did not get right back up from this collision. The men at the
professional level are extremely fit and extremely fast. Therefore concussions are
the most common and most serious injury in the NFL.

This footage captured the event on what happened to
Jermichael Finely after being hit helmet to helmet during the game against the
Bengals. It demonstrates how after taking a hit helmet to helmet in the sport
of football can quickly take a turn on your body. Jermicahel Finely in this
video speaks about how after taking the hit, he tried running to the sideline,
but when he looked up all he saw was jersey’s and pants, but everyone had no
head or legs. He also stated that his whole body had some type of burning
sensation.

Short Writing Assignment #3 “Straub”
In the article
“Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students’ Writing” by Richard Straub, he
gives the reader guidance on how to better their evaluation method when looking
over someone else’s paper. Straub writes on how the reader should handle an
appropriate revision by telling them where to put comments, how much to
evaluate, and what tone should be used when giving feedback. He also writes
that the reader should not only point out areas where the writer lacks and
needs improvement but point out what you like about certain parts of the work.
Straub states that the reader should not be afraid to critic a piece of work
harshly, because we as peer editors are simply doing so to help the writer get
better. He makes it really clear that in order to really communicate comments
to a writer is to make them specific and clear. Really responding to other
students writing will make you a better writer because it forces you to
automatically peer review your own writing as your working on it.
