In the article
“Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students’ Writing” by Richard Straub, he
gives the reader guidance on how to better their evaluation method when looking
over someone else’s paper. Straub writes on how the reader should handle an
appropriate revision by telling them where to put comments, how much to
evaluate, and what tone should be used when giving feedback. He also writes
that the reader should not only point out areas where the writer lacks and
needs improvement but point out what you like about certain parts of the work.
Straub states that the reader should not be afraid to critic a piece of work
harshly, because we as peer editors are simply doing so to help the writer get
better. He makes it really clear that in order to really communicate comments
to a writer is to make them specific and clear. Really responding to other
students writing will make you a better writer because it forces you to
automatically peer review your own writing as your working on it.
